Charles J Tan

What Is All About

Genre: Pop Folk
Country: Australia

Described as nomadic folk rock, Melbourne based Charles J Tan's soulful baritone voice has been compared to the likes of John Mayer and Jack Johnson. A proven performer, Charles won the top spot in 2009's The Storytellers, a local singer/songwriter competition in Melbourne, beating 25 contestants. Shortly after in 2010, he was nominated among the Top 50 in the Australia-wide MusicOz Awards for his single, "Almost Sunday". 2011 saw the debut release of his self produced album, "The Pelham Sessions", a collection of 8 original songs written, recorded and bespoked in his warehouse apartment. Since the release, Charles has spent the first half of the year taking the independent route to launch the album in an unconventional tour of over 50 shows through 5 cities, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Los Angeles, Cairns and Melbourne performing at small intimate venues to street busking to major music festivals most notably at Music Matters and Bay Beats Music Festival in Singapore this year. Charles takes inspiration in his songwriting from his diaspora background of a nomad moving from his birthplace, Singapore, to seek out new opportunities in a new land. His songs deal with the journey of human kind in our search for meaning, connection, community, love and belonging. He has just finished an Asia Pacific support tour with YouTube sensation, Clara C from Los Angeles, through Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines and Australia.

  • The Great Spy Experiment

    The Great Spy Experiment

    The Lights

    Genre: Indie Rock
    Country: Singapore

Drawing inspiration from musicians such as Interpol, Ash, Mansun, Sigur Ros and Radiohead, The Great Spy Experiment are a 5-piece Singaporean band who create heartfelt, melodic indie-rock that will move you and get you moving. As much guitar-led as it is beat-driven, with indie riffs juxtaposing irresistible pop hooks and dance textures overlaying dance-able rock-grooves, the music is created with the dancefloor in mind and the bedroom at heart. From very humble beginnings, The Great Spy Experiment have grown to become Singapore's indie darlings on the back of incessant gigging and electrifying live performances, featuring in internationally renowned events such as the Baybeats, Singfest, Mosaic and ZoukOut festivals in Singapore, and bringing their music to audiences as far and wide as New York, Texas, Taipei and Perth. Their debut full-length album "Flower Show Riots", released in September 2007, garnered rave reviews from both the local and international media, with one reviewer touting it as a minor tour-de-force that stands up easily to any modern-rock LP on the Billboard charts. The band's second album "Litmus" is out soon.

  • White Shoes and The Couples Company

White Shoes and The Couples Company

    Masa Remadja

    Genre: Indie Pop
    Country: Indonesia

White Shoes & The Couples Company formed in 2002 by Art Institute of Jakarta colleagues-turned-lovers Rio (Yusmario Farabi) and Sari (Aprilia Apsari). The original line-up of the band included Sari on vocals and violins, Rio on rhythm guitar and a third Art Institute colleague Saleh on melody guitar. Always conceptualizing the band as more than a trio, after their Indonesian debut Sari and Rio asked another couple from the music department at the school to join the band. Though they initially turned down the offer to focus on plays in an orchestra and lecturing, Ricky Surya Virgana and Mela Virgana eventually accepted Sari and Rio's invitation to bring their keyboard, bass, and orchestral talents to the group, the line-up for White Shoes & The Couples Company was almost there. All that was missing from the band's already rich indie-pop sound was the percussive crash of drums, a void filled by John Navid in 2004. The sextet was complete.

Influenced by 1930s jazz, 1970s movie soundtracks and everything in between, White Shoes have created a gentle, hypnotizing and gorgeous sound that has made them stand-out among the global musical masses. The band has already received the honors of being named one of the "Top 25 Bands on MySpace" by Rolling Stone Magazine and "One of the 25 Most Crushworthy Bands of 2006" by All Music Guide.

Their first EP, recorded in Revolver Studio in Jakarta and produced by Bayu Renno, was released in December 2009. Their first single "It's The Beginning Of The End" was ranked in the Top 100 LA Indiefest 2009.

    BoWsER

    Animal

    Genre: Rock
    Country: Australia

Hearing BoWsER perform is something you won't forget in a hurry. This is the way rock music is meant to be. It's tight, it's fast, it's dynamic and most importantly, it's interesting. There's a hint of just about everything in BoWsER's music, but you'd be hard-pressed to find another band that sounds even remotely like them. And thanks to a brilliant release, run of great shows, and plenty of airplay it seems people just about everywhere are starting to take notice of this four-piece from Queensland's Gold Coast.

Their combined talents were soon recognised with EMI Publishing signing the band to a worldwide publishing deal. Then came "Modus Operandi", the slap you in the face mini-album of 2007. Greeted with rave reviews, lead track "Soldier" not only scored national airplay, the band picked up a Triple J Unearthed gong, supporting Eagles of Death Metal in the process. "Soldier" also helped BoWsER earn a spot in the finals of both the Rock Category and The Courier-Mail People's Choice Award at the 2007 Q Song Awards. The release of "Modus Operandi" saw the band expand its already never-ending run of tours and shows up and down the east coast of Australia. To date they've played some of the country's best festivals – including the Big Day Out and the Playground Festival – and shared a stage with its biggest bands, among them Grinspoon and Gyroscope. They also managed to impress industry figures from around the globe when they showcased at Brisbane's BIG SOUND music industry conference. The result of that one brilliant set was more touring and a growing interest in a band clearly ready to step on to a bigger stage. "Modus Operandi" is now available to download from dozens of e-tailers worldwide through SUGARRUSH Records and IODA. To date, the band has sold a growing number downloads around the globe – from Japan and the USA, to the UK and Europe. Its release overseas is building on the interest the band is now earning abroad, particularly in North America.

  • Vicky Singh

    Vicky Singh

    Troubletown

    Genre: Indian Roots/Rock
    Country: Denmark

If you hear of Vicky from Scandinavia, you would probably think of a tall woman with long blond hair.

So first things first - Vicky Singh is an untraditional Danish male singer-song writer with Indian roots and strong believes in rock. He has by now played with most of the established Danish music names and is now in stead ready with his own debut album, "Heartful Of Hollow".

"I have loved playing with great artists but have always dreamt of creating my own music. Now, I've forced myself to take the time to finish my album and it is such a great experience to perform around Denmark and see people getting off to my own songs", says Vicky Singh.

Leaving Danish borders behind - With his 4-piece band Vicky has worked on "Heartful Of Hollow" during the last four years and it is set to release in the beginning of 2012. His band consists of three other well-known names in Danish music: Peter Kjøbsted (bass), Johan Lei Gellett (drums) and Mats Madestam (keys).

"The entire process of writing, recording and working with the music has been really cool and inspiring, so I definitely want to do more records in the future. For now, I'm focused on this album; getting it out to people, wherever they are in the world", Vicky Singh explains.

His many abilities on stage are often mentioned by his fellow Danish music stars, but overriding the sitar, tablas and many other elements of Vicky Singhs different performances, is his charismatic voice and powerful guitarplay.

Not all about sun and happiness - The lyrics on "Heartful Of Hollow" are far from joy and fortune but cover the many other aspects of love both to partners, family and friends. The music is definitely emotional but in a powerful way with a melodious sound of rock from the late 60'ies.

  • Side Effect

    Side Effect

Ye Wai Wai (Evenings Under The Influence)

    Genre: Indie/Indie Rock/Indie Punk
    Country: Burma

Side Effect play catchy, in-your-face indie rock tracks about love, hookers, booze-soaked nights, and the pitfalls and loneliness of modern urban living, informed by a scuzzy upbringing in the local underground inner-city punk scene. Oh yeah, they are also from Yangon, Myanmar. Also known as Rangoon, Burma.

Writing, recording and performing original music in one of the most remote and undeveloped cities in Asia has its share of difficulties. When there is no electricity, Side Effect makes noise when the generator's on. When their songs are blocked by the dreaded government censors, Side Effect develop stronger metaphors, analogies, and symbols to relate their feelings. Side Effect play songs that stand out over the incessant downpour of the monsoon rains. Side Effect makes music that reveals the heartfelt gut-feelings of the millions of frustrated youth whose voices are drowned out by headlines about dictators and dissidents.

With Darko C. on vocals and lead guitar, his brother Jozeph K. on guitar and bass, and Tser Htoo on drums, Side Effect break the trend by writing catchy, original tunes – a rarity in the cover-driven / copy-song landscape that is popular music in Myanmar. Side Effect play what they want to play and what moves them; they don't care about fitting into strictly defined genres.

Side Effect is unsigned, they have a DIY mindset, and they want to release their debut LP independently. Side Effect wants the world to hear their music… so, listen up, world!

    Politics

    Genre: Rock
    Country: Malaysia

Since Rosevelt was formed June 2009, they have been living out the dream in the local music scene. This dream is simple: to blaze trails of their own among the footsteps of local indie music greats. The spirit of Rosevelt is best summed up in their public debut at Indie Youth Fest 2009: indie, young, and in the serious business of a good rockin time. So what kind of rock music exactly do they play? Some say Hard Melodic Rock, some say Alternative Rock. They say the kind of rock that will have you headbanging till you get a massive whiplash the next day. That's if you let yourself go. Big fans of Incubus since forever, the band was quoted saying "Keep working towards your dreams, cause in our case it really did come true."

  • Czarina

    Czarina

    My Soul

    Genre: Pop
    Country: Australia

Based in Melbourne, Australia but born in the Philippines, Czarina has had music running through her veins since she was a child. Through joining various choirs and bands, and teaming up with a number of talented singers, songwriters, rappers, musicians and producers from Australia and abroad, she gained more insight into her love for creating music.

Czarina's passion has not only brought her to writing and recording many original songs but she most recently became a published author for a new childrens book called, "My friend Aytoo Zee". An enjoyable story that trails the adventurous search for a tiny boy named Aytoo Zee, introducing young readers to friends that are uniquely lovable and vibrant, as the alphabet unfolds on each page - all the way from A to Z (Aytoo Zee).

Now, as music has evolved through time, so have Czarinas original songs. Her main sound of dreamy vocals and sweet harmonies has been influenced by her childhood pop idol, Janet Jackson. Czarina, however, always tries to combine a positive message into her lyrics and a broad emotional tie that any listener can relate to, along with a catchy and easy listening melody.

"My Soul" is the first release from the upcoming EP that Czarina is currently working on in this, her new (or in some ways old) style. Written by Czarina, produced at Tender Trap Studios (Northcote, Melbourne) featuring Anita Quayle on cello, this beautiful ballad was inspired by Czarina's favourite novel, The Host, by Stephenie Meyer. (To coincide with her childrens book, Czarina is also working on a children's music CD which should be released in 2012.)

Czarina's album, "Diamond Sunset"(2010) and self-titled EP (2007) are available for purchase on iTunes. Her single, "Good Luck Charm" (2011) was released via Digisingle.

Keeping busy through all of this, while being the proud mother of two children, Jet (6) and Ciera (3), Czarina definitely lives her life to the fullest. To quote her lyrics: "We only have One Life to Live, let's all the make the most of it, if we stick together, we can make it work. Life will only pass you by, so instead of asking why, just appreciate the time we get to spend together."

    Hamish Gordon

    She's A Lonely Man

    Genre: Rock/Blues
    Country: Australia

Hamish Gordon is an artist who is highly committed to expressing the truth; the honesty felt in his lyrics clearly reflects the trials he has overcome in order to achieve his level of acclaim from fans and critics alike. However, despite being incredibly multi-talented, he does not take himself too seriously. His music, though it is gritty and inspired by traditionally down-tempo genres, explodes through the speakers and draws you in, enveloping listeners in involved riffs, fast-paced percussion and an eloquent set of intriguing lyrics that leave you wanting more. His mantra, "don't freak, just fix" is what carries him through even the direst of creative conundrums. And the origin of his band name? "Ward 65 was where I did all my relaxing…you know. In the nuthouse." And you can't get much more honest than that.

    Stick To The Shallows

    False Accession

    Genre: Hardcore
    Country: Australia

Anyone who was born and raised on the urban fringe of Melbourne, Australia, knows that the unique strain of melodic hardcore spilling from the suburbs is not a sound that is easily disputed. And, if school-aged metal aficionados Stick to the Suburbs are anything to go by, you do not need to have been born and raised all that long ago, to occupy a large slice of the limelight in the national metal-music scene.

Currently completing their final years of schooling, the four-piece met throughout their servitude at Bentleigh Secondary College, and became involved with Valleyarm Digital Pty Ltd in mid-2011. Their self-titled EP, which exploded onto iTunes in October 2011, offers up a delicious array of heavily distorted hardcore gems, which, while the sound exceeds the preconceived limits of their tender age, is not something that takes itself too seriously.

An official EP launch is scheduled before the year is out, and 2012 will see Stick to the Shallows release a second full-length EP, and commence a run of shows with renowned hardcore and metalcore acts from Australia and abroad. Keep up to date on their Facebook page, Twitter account or buy their self-titled mini release from iTunes for the epic price of $4.99. What's not to love?

    The Medicine Show

    Black Betty

    Genre: Blues
    Country: Australia

In a northern suburb of Brisbane in Queensland Australia, the Medicine Show was conceived, labored, born and then nurtured.

The music is a true suburban jambalaya of influence ranging form Delta Blues through to post WWII Chicago Blues to REAL Country and Hillbilly music. Along with this is generous dash of Garage / Alternative vibe.

A trio of fine musicians in the tradition of the Dirty Three, the Bad Seeds, Tom Waits and Howlin' Wolf. The Medicine Show has performed with Wolfmother, Nashville Pussy, The Beasts of Bourbon, The Gin Club, Gentle Ben and His Sensitive Side along with a host of local up and coming groups from around Australia.

The Medicine Show are constantly performing, all along the east coast of Australia and enjoys regular radio airplay through community radio stations around the country. The Medicine Show receives a lot of radio support throughout the E.U. and the United States and Japan, via internet community and college and mainstream radio.

We have also been approached to submit works for various soundtrack productions and are represented in the U.S. by FreePlay Music -www.freeplaymusic.com

Of these the most exciting to date would be the Suicide Girls Television Series, which is currently in production. So ostensibly, the band is doing alright.

  • All The Cattle

    All The Cattle

    What Have You Done

    Genre: Rock
    Country: Australia

All the Cattle are an all-Aussie band spawning from the bohemian cultural hub of Australia. With influences ranging from 90s grunge and 80s rock, to 60s and 70s psychadelia, the band also draws upon influences of the new millennium avant guard sound.

Their release "What Have You Done" was recorded live over a weekend of drinking, BBQ's and just hanging out together; the tribal hypnotic drums, the guttural pounding bass and the textural, bluesy and sometimes insane screaming guitar. Vocalist Andrew Grant's soulful smoky tone is complementary to the band's execution of testosterone-induced gusto and he lives up to his reputation as the gut-wrenching-all-out-rock-and-roll singer he is known locally for.

Co-songwriter, guitarist and producer credentials go to Tim Henwood. And with a history of internationally chart-topping success with the likes of ARIA winners Rogue Traders and The Androids as well as an enviable rock pedigree including his work as member of The Superjesus and the Mark Seymour solo band, there is everyone's reason to jump on board his latest music project.

With 3 more singles ready to roll, the album will see completion by the end of the year.

Singer Andy Grant and Tim Henwood are available for interviews and to perform the song(s) acoustically on air, please contact Matt Campbell -matt@valleyarm.com

Multifaceted singer-songwriter Jaime Robbie Reyne is certainly a busy man. A showcase of nomadic vocals and raw country-blues, the current success of his 2011 release "Remember to Breathe" has been critically acclaimed, and has already spawned the recording of his latest EP in the hectic atmosphere of New York City. Rolling Stone magazine has described him as a "new artist you should know about," and his music has been the talk of major music reviewers such as Kathy McCabe of the Daily Telegraph, Jeff Jenkins of Inpress Magazine, and a host of others, both in print, TV and online. His recent tour of the US & Canada, which took him from the edgy Tropicana of Los Angeles and indie-scene of Toronto, to the bustling metropolis of the Big Apple, has left a string of awe-struck international audiences in his wake. Oh, and he's the son of prolific Australian rock legend, James Reyne. Interested? Thought so.

The Melbourne singer, who first picked up the guitar in his teens, has reached a formidable level of success in his short time on the scene; a contributing factor to his recent signing to Valleyarm.
